In this episode, host Carol Pelletier Radford welcomes guests Maggie Lee McHugh and Erin Jacobson. In addition to sharing their teacher stories and classroom strategies, they talk about their experiences with project-based learning. Maggie shares some themes from her book Bringing Project-Based Learning to Life in Mathematics, K-12. Erin also shares her story, "Honor Your Teaching Style" from Carol's book "When I Started Teaching, I Wish I Had Known..."

Maggie McHugh believes all students are creative, compassionate, intellectual learners who, when given the right educational conditions, grow to be insightful, engaged citizens in our society. For Maggie, Project-Based Learning (PBL) lays the foundation for every learner to find success. As the Innovation Specialist at La Crosse Polytechnic, a project based secondary school in La Crosse, WI, Maggie has the honor of exploring the world alongside her students, guiding classes such as STEM, Humanities, Makerspace, and Mathematics. Additionally, Maggie has the pleasure of serving as a National Faculty member for PBLWorks, traveling the United States to work with educators on implementing PBL in their classroom and district. To uplift the mathematics community, Maggie serves as the Wisconsin Mathematics Council Annual Conference Co-Chair. She is also a member of NCTM’s Classroom Resource Committee. Maggie is the 2021 Midwest Regional winner of the National University Teacher Award and the Wisconsin Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2019. She received the state honors for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Maggie has her National Board Certification in early adolescence mathematics. Maggie’s dedication to empowering all learners is fueled by her “kiddos” who daily remind her of the courage, compassion, and perseverance needed to continuously become a better “you”.

Erin Jacobson

Erin Jacobson is the Coordinator of the North Dakota Teacher Support System, an organization that provides mentoring to all first and second year teachers in the state and professional development for instructional coaches, mentors, beginning teachers and administrators. Prior to coordinating the NDTSS, she was an instructional coach, classroom teacher and a social worker. 

Erin is passionate about supporting and retaining educators, which has led her to write for the Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice, The Learning Professional and contribute to When I Started Teaching, I Wish I Had Known. Erin received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Elementary Education, and her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

Carol Pelletier Radford is the founder of Mentoring in Action, an organization dedicated to the success of novice teachers and their mentors. Before she established her own organization to support mentors and new teachers, she was a veteran elementary school teacher and a teacher preparation leader. Carol is the author of Corwin’s bestselling books Mentoring in Action: Guiding, Sharing, and Reflecting With Novice Teachers and The First Years Matter: Becoming an Effective Teacher.

Carol received her Education Doctorate from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, where she focused her studies on mentoring and teacher leadership. She is also a certified yoga teacher who practices meditation and shares mindfulness strategies with educators through her online courses and website. Her podcast Teaching With Light features the stories of teachers and inspirational leaders. Her next passion project is the creation of a Teacher Legacy Network, where retired teachers can share their wisdom with the next generation of teachers.
