Presented by Ivannia Soto
[Recorded]
Date: Monday, December 18, 2023
Duration: 60 minutes
Since Breaking Down the Wall: Essential Shifts for English Learners’ Success was published in 2019, there have been many changes in the field, including new research, policies, and new learning from practical application across the country regarding the importance of dual language programs for multilingual learner success. With the increased momentum behind multilingual and dual language education come certain challenges, such as the need for more bilingually authorized teachers, high-quality instructional resources, and accurate assessment and accountability in the target languages of instruction.
Drawing from their contributions to the newly released Breaking Down the Monolingual Wall: Essential Shifts for Dual Language Success, Dr. Ivannia Soto and a panel of her co-authors will explore the systemic and pedagogical approaches needed for success in the field of multilingual education. Attendees will come away with:
- An overview of why dual language immersion programs are more important now than ever.
- Vignettes that contextualize the types of issues and solutions that are encountered when implementing dual language programs.
- The latest research on topics such as translanguaging and critical consciousness when implementing dual language programs.
