Why the ELA Standards ARE Important
Monday, October 2, 2017 - 3:30pm
Presented by Jim Burke
Jim Burke knows personally, both from his own teaching and his consulting work with schools nationwide, that the standards—whether state-based or Common Core—provide a set of core beliefs about what students need to learn to be academically- and career-ready and mirror best teaching practices. Jim finds that the standards are both validating—confirming those practices teachers are already implementing in their classrooms—and liberating—providing research-based structures and strategies that help teachers and students engage in important ideas and inquiry.
Participants will:
- Learn how the standards—whether Common Core or state-specific—promote best ELA practices
- Review one or two standards, how to teach them, and what this teaching looks like in the classroom
- Discover a resource that helps them identify the standards used in their state and provides a wealth of guidance on how to implement them in the classroom
