Gojak, Linda

Winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, Linda M. Gojak directed the Center for Mathematics and Science Education, Teaching, and Technology (CMSETT) at John Carroll University for 16 years. She has spent 28 years teaching elementary and middle school mathematics, and has served as the president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM), and the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She is all about getting K-8 teachers and students active and excited about learning and doing mathematics.  Her presentations are extremely practical.  Teachers and administrators leave with many ideas for implementing effective teaching practices in the mathematics classroom.  At the same time, she values and integrates the importance of building deep understanding of mathematics and ways to meet the needs of students at all levels of achievement.  Building conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas and problem solving sit at the core of expertise. Linda is a Corwin Mathematics consultant.

  • Cutting to the Core: Common Core Standards for Mathematics in Grades K–2, 3-5 or K–5: The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics are here. These standards call for a balance among conceptual understanding, procedural skills, and applications. They are focused, coherent and clear about what our students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade level and have specific progressions within and across grade levels. Additionally the standards for mathematical practice should be incorporated into instructional practice so that our students become mathematically proficient. All teachers must understand the content and recognize effective teaching practice that impacts student learning if the message of these standards is to become a reality. The implications of these standards now in and the next few years on content and instruction must be considered now if students are to be college and career ready.

    This workshop will help teachers better understand the Common Core Mathematics content standards and can be tailored to the K–2, 3-5 or K–5 levels, providing a variety of teaching practices that incorporate the practices and develop formative assessments to improve student learning.

    This 3-day course will help teachers of grades, principals and curriculum directors to:

    • Take a closer look at the content standards and what they mean at each grade level
    • Examine the learning progressions among the grade levels
    • Experience standards-based instruction and activities that encompass the instructional shifts called for by college and career ready standards
    • Learn how to align your current mathematics programs to determine which content matches the Common Core standards including what must be changed and what must be added
    • Examine additional resources for deeper teaching and deeper understanding
    • Reflect on models for developing the characteristics of a mathematically proficient student as envisioned in the Standards for Mathematical Practice
    • View and consider how The Common Core Companion can support implementation of the CCSS-M in your classroom
    • Examine formative assessment protocols to ensure meaningful teaching and learning
