Peter Cookson’s knowledge of schools and children’s learning needs comes from a lifetime of teaching, researching, and working to improve the quality of education for all children. His first job after college was as a case worker for the New York City Department of Social Services. His days were spent visiting the homes of the city’s most disadvantaged citizens. It is to these families, especially the children, that he owes a life’s commitment to the cause of educational justice.

Initially hired in 1978 to facilitate counseling groups, she approached the task with enthusiasm and massive naivete as she had little training in group counseling. Based on her natural optimism and easy way of relating to students, she developed a variety of skills and techniques that were closely related to the later work of the innovators of solution-focused counseling.

Justin T. Cooper is an Associate Professor and Assistant Department Chair in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville. He received his Ed.D. in Special Education with an emphasis in learning and behavioral disorders from the University of Kentucky. He is a Past President of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders, a division of the Council for Exceptional Children.
