Achilles, Charles

Charles M. Achilles

Charles M. Achilles is Professor of Educational Leadership, College of Education, Eastern Michigan University (EMU). He received his doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Rochester and worked briefly at the (former) U.S. Office of Education, for 21 years at the Bureau of Educational Research and Service, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, for 6 years at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and since 1994 at EMU. 

Jay R. Fuhriman

Jay R. Fuhriman is Professor of Bilingual Education and English as a Second Language at Boise State University, Boise, Idaho. He currently directs two undergraduate and one graduate program in bilingual education/ESL. He earned his doctorate degree from Texas A&M University (formerly Texas A&I) in Kingsville, TX, in Curriculum and Instruction and worked as a consultant and teacher prior to joining the teaching staff in 1977.  

Louis, Karen

Karen Seashore Louis

Karen Seashore Louis is the Rodney Wallace Professor of Educational Policy and Administration at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities. Her area of expertise includes improvement in K–12 leadership and policy over the last 30 years, particularly in urban secondary schools. Louis also conducts research on organizational changes within higher education, with particular attention to faculty roles, and on international comparative policy in educational reform.



April Marie Swick

April M. Swick was assigned to Clement Avenue Elementary School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in August 1990 and began with a class of combined fourth and fifth graders. She was a highly involved staff member, concerned not only with the success of the children in her classroom but also with the betterment of the entire school population. She belonged to a wide variety of com-mittees and worked to ensure schoolwide discipline, a positive climate, and school spirit.

Mei Kuin Lai

Mei Kuin Lai completed her doctorate at the University of Auckland and has since worked as an education con­sultant to support practitioners (teachers, principals, administrators) and Ministry of Education officials as they develop inquiry as part of their daily lives.




Gregg E. Humphrey

Gregg Humphrey’s belief is that you teach the way you are taught. With this in mind, Gregg’s courses are inquiry-based, students taking an active role as preservice teachers. As the Director of Elementary Teacher Education, Middlebury College, he works directly with the Middlebury community. Each pre-service student is assigned to a classroom in an elementary school within the Addison Central Supervisory Union where they to apply the ideas emerging from their course work.

Reinhardt, Karen

Karen S. Reinhardt

Karen Reinhardt is a former Co-Director of the Center for Science Education (having worked at the Center as a Program Associate for several years prior to becoming Co-Director.) She left the Center in July, 2002 to pursue graduate study in educational administration and supervision.
